I was delighted when John & David chose us to photograph their upcoming wedding. Since they live in Texas, we were only ever able to hear each others voices over the phone and chat over emails. But listening to them speak and reading between the lines in their emails, I could tell that they were a really wonderful couple. The back story is that they met at a gym in San Francisco. At the time John was already in a relationship so he avoided any conversation with David (other than polite hellos). Approximately six months after they met, John ended the other relationship and three days later went to the gym hoping to run into David. When John found him, he nervously approached, asked him for a date, and he accepted. That was back in 1999. Fifteen years later, the U.S. government began recognizing same-sex marriages. It was on a trip back to Canada to visit family that John had casually mentioned that they should get married and David agreed. When they arrived in Canada and told David’s family of their plans, they were beyond excited about it. Until then, neither David or John had no idea how badly the family wanted them to get married. These are just a few of my favourite of their same-sex engagement photos at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Here’s another same-sex engagement session we photographed not long ago in Hamilton
